A Glimmer of Hope

By editor | October 23, 2008

My wife and I have been married for 5 years now. Just like any couple, married or not, we have had our ups and downs. At first everything was great between us and I couldn`t have been happier. Then, slowly, we started arguing about seemingly insignificant things. Before we knew it, we were making plans without each other, keeping secrets, ignoring each others needs and becoming insensitive.

Once things got really bad, my wife decided we should go to marriage counseling. At first I was totally against it. I really hated the thought of sitting down with a total stranger, who I now have to pay to tell me what are problems are. I argued with my wife about going, which caused more turmoil in our relationship. Finally I decided things couldn`t get any worse and I would do anything to stop divorce, so I gave in and my wife and I went to see a counselor.

At first I didn`t think it was that bad. Our marriage counselor was nice and very understanding. She had been married and divorced herself and seemed sympathetic. But, my wife and I continued to argue and at times I started to think our marriage was hopeless. What were we paying this lady for? Could she really help us save our marriage from what seemed like inescapable doom?

Two months into our counseling, I called it quits. I`m not a quitter, but I refused to pay someone to help me who wasn`t making a difference. This infuriated my wife and left her emotionless, on the brink of giving up all together herself. I spent many nights alone on the couch, angry and resentful, contemplating packing my bags and leaving for good. Then one lonely night, laying on my new bed, the couch, I saw an ad on TV. I can`t remember the exact words, something like “… How to Save Your Marriage…”, but the words stuck in my head. I quickly turned up the volume and that`s when I learned about this at home program. I really liked the idea of getting help, but more of a do-it-yourself type program that you can order on TV or on-line and then try from the comfort of your own home. I was sick of feeling hopeless and tired of seeing my wife miserable. I thought, if this doesn`t work, then that`ll be it, we will finally call it quits. So, with nothing to lose, I called the number and ordered these DVD`s for marital help.

Only a few days later the package arrived. I felt a mix of emotions flood over me as I knew this might be our last hope. I explained what I had ordered to my wife and she seemed not only surprised, but thrilled that I had even been thoughtful enough to order the DVD`s in the first place. I`ll never forget that moment. Just the old familiar look of joy on her face seemed like a step in the right direction. We hadn`t even started yet, and I could already see a change in her demeanor, in the way she looked at me. That change gave us hope.

Now, only a few months later, my wife and I are on the right track. We continue to struggle and have our ups and downs, but now we don`t feel hopeless when we have our bad days. This program made us see each others perspective with a new light. For me, being able to work together, in our own home, in our own time, was exactly what we needed. I would recommend this program to anyone. Just search for Mort Fertel and you will find his website, dedicated to helping marriages succeed. Give it a shot, what have you got to lose?
